Stoneybatter Cat Crawl

Europe’s one, as far as we can find: twenty Stoneybatter households, a map, and a portrait if your cat will not come to the window.

The only one we can find outside North America. Sinéad Davis of the Pride of Place Stoneybatter volunteers read about the Toronto tour and adapted it for a Dublin neighbourhood, and it now runs as part of the Stoneybatter Festival.

Nearly twenty households take part. You get a map marked with locations and names, and you go at your own pace between eleven and one. The detail that gives the whole thing away: a cat that will not perform gets a portrait in the window instead, so the house is still a stop.

Free, with a bucket for the Cat and Dog Protection Association of Ireland. It raised €454 in its first year.

Dates move every year. Pride of Place Stoneybatter has this year’s.

Nobody has caught a cat in Dublin yet.

Not one. The whole city is unclaimed, which means every cat you meet on this walk is a first find with your name on it, permanently, on a card nobody else can have.

Someone is going to be first.

Walking it? Bring a Chonk-dex.

Chonk Finder turns the cats you meet into trading cards. It works on the route, and it works on your own street on a Tuesday, which is the bit the walk cannot do.

  1. Meet a catOn the route, in a window, on a wall. Any cat counts.
  2. Take its photoYou get a card back: a name, a rarity, and two attacks it did not consent to.
  3. Find it againFour different people find the same cat and it becomes a Chonk. Permanently.
